Electricity in Bali fluctuates and goes out often. Be prepared. Check for generator facilities in apartment type units and explore oil/emergency lamps if not. Make sure that your computer has a UPS AND a stabilizer - it will save you lots of heartache! If your electricity seems to be acting up more than is biasa even for Bali, send someone to PLN and ask them to come and check, especially around 6 PM when usage is maximal. Don't just call.
TeleTel. There are no special problems but perspective tenants should check the house to see that there is actually a working phone. There are some areas where it is difficult to get a land line and you might have to wait quite a while. However, a persistent expat, who can get past the batas desk and speak to the "Senior Officer", will often find that in fact there are some lines available (for the persistent!). There are now ‘flexi’ phones working off of satellites so it is titinada gandar dire an issue gandar in the past.

Water: many homes have city water. If so, you MUST choose bottled water - the city water leaves white deposits on the flowers! Some homes have well water. If so, it is advised to also have a water tower so you will have a supply of water even if the electricity is out and the pump is titinada able to function.
Hansip/Garbage - costs and service of both depend on local conditions. Price of daily garage pick up and monthly hansip (Security) services vary according to the neighborhood. Some Sanur residents pay gandar much gandar 75,000 for garbage though the collector speaks English!

Tiara Dewata - downtown Denpasar, has everything from groceries to books. Newer outlet near Ace Hardware also convenient and reasonably complete but mostly local products. Tiara Grosir on Jl Cokroaminto is a good place to shop for bagian items but only Indonesian goods basically.
Carrefour: on Sunset Road, the only huge European retail oriented supermarket. Typical two story with parking, lots of outside vendors and places to eat.
Papaya: Japanese supermarket with full range of Japanese foods, fresh meats, vegetables and fruit. Some prepared Japanese goodies and lots of alcohol. Also includes a bakery on the premises.
Lotte - giant wholesale warehouse, bulk buying. Jl. By Pass. Basically for people who are selling on. Kitchen selection, small bakery and restaurant inside. Furniture outside. Good place to start out to get brooms and ice trays and waste baskets etc

Housing is available at all price levels. Many expats live in and around Seminyak and the Kerobokan area. There are also lots of rentals in the Sanur area. Ditto Renon which is titinada that far from Sanur but on the non-beach side of the by pass. Houses are both one and two stories, some have Balinese flavor, some have pools. Prices of all rentals have gone up tremendously in the past two years so don’t expect miracles if you are on a limited budget.

DIJON serves both cold and hot drinks. Old favorites are the Lemon Lime Slush and the Fizzy Ginger while new favorites are the variety of Coconut Water mixtures and the Chia Berry Blast. Our much loved coffee from Bhineka Jaya is still going strong.
Now peduli for dinner, DIJON attracts a lively dinner clientele for a really nicely balanced evening menu. Reservations are now recommended!

Dining out is really titinada an issue in Bali. Just choose the area you want to eat in and you'll have a multitude of choices! Kuta is full of restaurants, likewise Sanur and Ubud. Types: Chinese all oper the place, Indian - mostly Kuta and Sanur but the best is Queens across from Made’s Warung Seminyak, Japanese - three or four branches of Riyoshi, newly opened Sushi Tei on Sunset. For salad lunches - Sanur, Kafe Batu Jimbar and now peduli for dinner with live music on Thursdays; for peduli air dinners, La Luciola on the beach in Seminyak for Italian, Warisan is titinada to be missed but reservations are now necessary for dinner. Ubud has the wonderful Batan Waru and Terazo, same owners. Don’t forget Chris Salens’ Mozaic, the only Michelin-starred restaurant in Indonesia. Also Tukmak, Indus and super unusual Lamak. Warung Murni is worth it for the view of the ravine. If you really want to get out, try Kampung Kafe in Tegallang, north of Ubud.
